Project #004 - Tree Topping to Create Wildlife Snags

This conservation project requires services for removing the tops from trees with a power saw at various locations on the Clackamas River Ranger Districts of the Mt. Hood National Forest in Clackamas County, Oregon.  This topping is not meant to kill the tree but to create a wildlife snag.

Trees to be topped are in partially harvested forests.  This project work will be done within the boundaries of units 8, 10, 11, and 12 of the Spoon Thin Stewardship Project.  The boundaries of these units will be designated with blue timber harvest signs, orange tree tags and white paint.

The Contractor shall furnish materials, labor, supervision, transportation, and all supplies not provided by the Government, which are required to complete the project.  The Government shall provide unit maps, aluminum signs, and blank tree registers.  The Contractor will fill out tree registers and map topped trees on unit maps prior to final inspection. 

Target Tree Details

*Due to safety issues or natural variation in stand sizes, there may be instances where girdling would need to occur above or below this range.  Trees chosen for topping should be representative of the largest DBH’s of the stand, excluding residual old-growth.
