Tree Topping to Create Snags

(Activity: CWD Creation)

Stewardship Contract:

Description:

Project #002 - Tree Topping to Create Wildlife Snags

This Stewardship Project requires services for removing the tops from trees with a power saw at various locations on the Clackamas River Ranger District of the Mt. Hood National Forest in Clackamas County, Oregon.  This topping is not meant to kill the tree but to create a wildlife snag.

Trees to be topped are in partially harvested young plantations or in un-harvested riparian reserves.  This project work will be done within the boundaries of the units of the Quarry Thin Stewardship Contract or in the un-treated riparian reserves directly adjacent to the units. The boundaries of these units will be designated with blue timber harvest signs, orange tree tags and white paint.

*Due to safety issues or natural variation in stand sizes, there may be instances where topping would need to occur above or below this range.  Trees chosen for topping should be representative of the largest DBH’s of the stand, excluding residual old-growth.
